So many questions. No really...like, all the questions

Last week I saw a "Memories" post on Facebook I've shared a couple times...Ruin a First Date in 4 Words. I enjoyed reading through my suggestions and the offerings supplied in the comments.

My date ruiners:

"5% tip, you think?"

"Really? You're ordering more?"
"Josh Groban is overrated."
"I own 5 cats."
"I'm a football coach."
"Restraining orders really suck."
"Sorry...my wife's calling."
"I loved The Happening."
"I always wear Axe."
"I hate Doctor Who."

Here are a few contributions from quite a variety of FB friends - from peers to parents.
Oh, and Matt. Can you guess which ones are his? ๐Ÿ˜„

"My mom drove me."
“Do you do cocaine?”
"Twilight's my favorite series!"
"Ke$ha's my favorite singer!"
"Cats are tiny people!"
"Casablanca is so over-rated"
"Welcome to the family."
"Hitler wasn't so bad."
"Prison wasn't that bad."

If I were to re-share it today, my additions would be:
"Arson? Never proved it."
"ComicCon? 30 time veteran!"
"Sleep is overrated."
"I hate Italian food."
"Favorite color? Pastel yellow."
"Negan is my hero."

Those date ruiners reminded me of a draft post I'd started putting together a while back with "first date questions." I didn't like what I had, so I decided to poke around the interwebs for some ideas.

Apparently lots of people have a lot of ideas for good first date questions! I found several lists with over a hundred questions each. Seriously, how long is this first date?! You planning on a 3 hour tour that gets stuck on a deserted island? ๐Ÿ

Valentine's Day is practically upon us, so I figured working through a couple lists would be apropos. Below are a plethora of questions. Some lists were more creative than others or broke the questions down into categories, like get to know you, funny, random or "would you rather." Overall they mostly felt like extensive Facebook quizzes. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Originally I figured I'd thin them out a bit, deleting questions to shorten the lists...but as I worked through them, I just kept on answering. So instead, I decided to highlight the better ones to create a "short list" of sorts. So feel free to just read those...or all of them...or none of them. Whatever floats your boat. ๐Ÿšข

First date questions
1. What do you like to do in your free time?
My free time is generally spent reading or catching up on TV shows. Or folding laundry. It seems like there's always a pile of laundry to fold. Speaking of which...(gets up to fold the current pile)
2. Are you more of an indoors or outdoors person?
More of an indoors person, though I do enjoy the outdoors under certain conditions. Due to my dislike of the cold or humidity, there are relatively small windows of optimal time to spend outside.
3. Who is the most fascinating person you’ve met?
This is a tough one. The first person who came to mind was my old boss, Colby Coash. He's had some incredible life experiences, from driving a hearse in high school (as in, that was his car) to being a tour guide in Rwanda in HS and Australia in college, to graduating with a theatre degree and subsequently acting in quite a few indie films. He also served as a state senator and brought a bill regarding film tax incentives, which he got Alexander Payne (Downsizing, The Descendants) and John Beasly (The Purge: Anarchy, The Mandalorian) to testify in support of at the hearing.
4. What was the last book you really got into?
Recursion by Blake Crouch. It's dark, complicated, super interesting and one you'll still be thinking about days later.
5. What are some movies you really enjoyed?
There are so many good movies, it's tough to choose. Off the top of my head: The Dark Knight, While You Were Sleeping, Speed, Sense and Sensibility, Taken, Sabrina and Die Hard.
6. What amazing adventures have you been on?
I'm not a super adventurous type, so maybe scrambling up a mountain in South Dakota in clogs (not my wisest decision) or navigating in Ireland (while someone else drove). My next will hopefully be a trip to Iceland this year.

7. What pets have you had?
Dogs and beta fish. When we lived in California, we had two dogs - Comet and Mollie - though not at the same time. In Nebraska, we've had Johnny and Joey, the Italian Greyhound and Cheweenie, respectively. And I had a couple betas in college (Squishy 1 and Squishy 2).
8. What’s your favorite alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink?
Hmm...a good single malt scotch has become my go-to alcoholic beverage, though I also like a flavorful Moscow Mule (I make a great one with cranberry juice and fresh lime) or a top shelf margarita on the rocks. For non-alcoholic, a white chocolate mocha.
9. What are you kind of obsessed with these days?
Nothing? Everything? I dunno. Blake Crouch and Oscar Wilde...finding the perfect mask for a masquerade (that's over 2 months away, lol). Searching for pics of brunettes with blue hair so I have the right example to show the beautician when I blue my hair again (once this blue ombre grows out)...?
10. Where have you traveled?
I've visited almost every state, thanks to my folks making travel a priority when we were kids. As an adult, I've done a bit of in-country traveling - California, Colorado, New York, Kansas and Arkansas - as well as some international, Italy in 2008, Ireland in 2017 and England in 2018. Also Canada in the mid-late 90s.
11. What’s your favorite international food?
Pasta and pizza count, right? ๐Ÿ˜ Otherwise a really authentic taco or tamale.
12. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl...which makes getting up at 6:15am for work during session less than pleasant.
13. What’s your favorite restaurant?
There's no way to pick just one...but I'm partial to a good Italian restaurant.
14. How many siblings do you have?
Four - one brother and three half siblings.
15. What would be your dream job?
Being a famous literary author...assuming I'd have the necessary talent to produce good, quality work to go along with it. Stop arguing with me...we both know I'm not Agatha Christie (I'm ok, not great). I'd never want to be prolific or famous without also being a good writer...ie. I'd never settle for writing romance novels. ๐Ÿ˜†
16. What would you do if you had enough money to not need a job?
Sleep. All the time. ๐Ÿ˜ Mostly travel, I think. There are so many places and things to see. And assuming that having enough money to not need a job means I have a pile of cash laying around, I'd probably establish a foundation of some kind. I've read about a couple organizations that create tiny house villages for homeless veterans...that would be a fulfilling use of my time.
17. Who is your favorite author?
There's no way I can pick one. Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Blake Crouch and Liane Moriarty are definitely top of the list.
18. What was the last show you binge-watched?
Gotham. I'd watched the first two and a half seasons as they aired and then finished up the last two and a half in about two months.
19. What TV series do you keep coming back to and re-watching?
How I Met My Mother. I can't tell you how many times I'm watched that series. Rule of Engagement is another one...I think I've watched that one at least 3 times.
20. What hobbies would you like to get into if you had the time and money?
Furniture painting and re-upholstering. I've chalk painted a couple pieces of furniture (a small table and a large dresser) and really enjoyed it.
21. If there was an Olympics for everyday activities, what activity would you have a good chance at winning a medal in?
Reading. Or internet shopping. I a badass deal finder. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
22. What would your perfect vacation look like?
Staying in one of those over-the-water bungalows with an infinity pool that has a deck that leads right to a peaceful lagoon. A peaceful, quiet vacation where you can stay in and be perfectly content or you could go out and do things, like snorkel or swim with dolphins.
23. Among your friends, what are you best known for?
Being a voracious reader? A good listener? A prodigious shopper? You'd have to ask my friends.
24. What music artist do you never get tired of?
Josh Groban. ๐Ÿ˜Š
25. What are some accomplishments that you are really proud of?
I graduated college in four years and have started traveling on my own.
26. What are some obscure things that you are or were really into?
I can't think of anything really obscure...unless Lora Zombie art counts, though enough people are aware of her that I don't think it does. I loved Lisa Frank and Brayer horses as a kid.
27. What are some things everyone should try at least once?
Horseback riding, flying in an airplane, and a kind of food you're unfamiliar with, preferably with someone who is familiar with it and knows what to order! ๐Ÿฝ
28. What fad did you never really understand?
Neon everything from the 80s (90s?).
29. What’s the best thing that has happened to you this month?
Seeing The Importance of Being Earnest at the Lincoln Community Playhouse.
30. What would your perfect morning be like?
The perfect morning is one where I don't see the sun until it's no longer morning. ๐Ÿ˜ If being awake in the AM is unavoidable, then one without rush, where I can enjoy a quiet cup of coffee or tea and read for a bit before life starts for the day.
31. Is there any art or artist you are really into?
It's clichรฉ, but I love Van Gogh, particularly any of his night sky pieces (Starry night, Starry Night over the Rhone and Cafe Terrace at Night). I'm also a big fan of Lora Zombie. I own several of her prints (The King and the Princess, Birds with Hats, The One You Feed, Welcome to Yourself, and a small canvas of Cosmic Unicorn)...a couple of them are signed. Space Frenchie will likely be my end-of-session gift to myself. ๐Ÿ˜
32. What are you always game for?
Going to a concert...or out to eat.
33. What do you do to unwind?
Something restful, like read a novel or watch a sitcom.
34. What’s your favorite app on your phone?
Pulse. It's a messaging app that you can also use on your computer. Makes typing so much easier when I'm at work or on my laptop.
35. Cutest animal? Ugliest animal?
As a category? Cutest - a dog/puppy. Ugliest - possum or star-nosed mall.
36. Who is the kindest person you know?
My mom (don't tell her I said that! ๐Ÿ˜). She cares more than almost anyone I know and goes out of her way to help people, from family to literally people walking down the street that seem upset or distressed.
37. What’s your favorite piece of furniture you’ve ever owned?
My couch...partly because it's one of the only pieces of furniture I've bought myself (other than bookshelves, lol). Either that or the dresser in my room, because it's huge and I chalked painted it myself. ๐Ÿ˜Š
38. Who are your kind of people?
People who are a little different. Not like, crazy different, but look at the world and have interests that are slightly out of the ordinary or aren't completely mainstream.
39. Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever been?
The beer can house in Houston or a house we rented in Thunder Bay (?) that I'm 100% sure someone died in (I got a super death-y vibe in that house).  That place was just kinda creepy.
40. What’s the silliest fear you have?
None of my fears are silly! How dare you?! That being said...probably the fear of a bathroom stall door opening while I'm in it, although I'd still argue that's a perfectly rational fear.
41. What would be the best city to live in?
Good golly...I don't know. Incline Village, Lake Tahoe?
42. What household chore is just the worst?
Dusting. I can't breathe for 2 days after dusting. ๐Ÿ˜
43. If you could give yourself a nickname, what nickname would you want people to call you?
I've never really been a nickname person.
44. What odd talent do you have?
I'm a pretty good personal shopper and gift giver. I have pretty good taste and am fairly intuitive and don't mind doing a lot of research to find just the right thing.
45. If you could give everyone just one piece of advice, what would it be?
Be yourself. Be your best self. Don't place your value in what other's think of you or let the world have undue influence on who you think you should be. There's just one of you, so don't be a copy of whatever's popular at the moment.
46. What would you like to know more about, but haven’t had the time to look into it?
Night photography. I love photographs of the night sky and northern lights, so having the ability to take those kind of pictures well would be awesome.
47. What country do you never want to visit?
China. Or Thailand.
48. What wrong assumptions do people make about you?
That I'm shy. I can be, but I'm mostly just quiet until I'm comfortable around people. Another was I'm "one of those judgmental uber-Christian types." I've heard that from a couple people, when they've express their relief that I'm not. ๐Ÿ™„
49. Do you prefer to work in a team or alone?
Alone. Rarely do I enjoy working on things as a team. When I do, I end up either doing all or none of the work, lol. When it's unavoidable, I do best when I'm given a piece to accomplish on my own that's part of the whole.
Mini-me and mini-Matt, 1988
50. What has been the best period of your life so far?
Each has had its issues, but probably grade school? I had a pretty good childhood...very few complaints, at least that don't involve an annoying little brother. ๐Ÿ˜
51. How have you changed from when you were in high school?
I was definitely more outgoing and hopeful in high school, though I'm more confident and experienced now.
52. How techie are you?
I'm fairly technologically savvy. Not like, coding level, but as long as we're not talking about Apple anything, I can generally figure out how to do something.
53. Where is the most fun place around where you live?
Umm...since I live in Nebraska...guess it depends on what kind of fun you're looking for? The Orpheum Theatre in Omaha is pretty great. And we have a good outlet mall...
54. Have you ever joined any meetup groups?
Nope, unless Gish counts (though I've never actually gone to one of their meetups). I did meet up with friends when we did Novel in a Day.
55. Where would your friends or family be most surprised to find you?
Strip club. ๐Ÿคฎ
56. What’s the most relaxing situation you could imagine?
In a hot tub with a gorgeous view on the side of a mountain.
57. What is the most beautiful view you’ve seen?
One of many views of Lake Tahoe.
58. What’s expensive but totally worth it?
Flowers, good perfume or an amazing meal.
59. When do you feel most out of place?
In a room full of people I don't know.
60. What’s the most recent thing you’ve done for the first time?
Gone out to eat at a nice, busy, full service restaurant alone...and it's not something I'm likely to do again any time soon. It's a sad and funny story. Ask me about it sometime.
61. How did you come to love one of your favorite musicians?

I can't think of a specific story, but their music has to move me...speak to my soul (ugh, that sounds so pretentious). For Imagine Dragons, I remember one of their songs popping up on Pandora and really liking it, which got me to look into their other music.
Prom, 2004
62. How did you meet your best friend?
As a matter of fact, I am currently accepting applications for that position. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I have several close friends at the moment...more than usual, actually...but no one I'd call a best friend. The previous title holder I met at prom. He was a close friend of my date.
63. What small seemingly insignificant decision had a massive impact on your life?
Attending a movie night. A friend started one to watch the Fast and Furious franchise before Hobbs and Shaw came out and since then we've become really good friends.
64. Where would you move if you could move anywhere in the world and still find a job and maintain a reasonable standard of living?
Lake Tahoe or Denver. Both are just too friggin' expensive!
65. Would you like to be famous? (If yes, what would you want to be famous for? If no, why not?)
Can it be both? I'd like to be a famous author, in the sense that I would like to have the talent to write novels people want to read, but I'd also hate actually being famous. I'm a very private person, so I'd hate losing my anonymity and having people I've never met think they have the right to know about or comment on my business (which is none of theirs).
66. What did you do last summer?
Last summer was tough. The first Monday of June I herniated a disc in my back and had to take two weeks off work. The first fun thing I was able to do that summer was attend a Josh Groban concert at Red Rocks in Colorado in late August. Otherwise the summer was mostly spent working and recovering.
67. If you lived to 100, would you rather keep the body or the mind of yourself at 30 until you were 100?
I sure hope I don't live to be 100! ๐Ÿ˜ณ But if I did, I think I'd rather the mind of 30 year old me. A deteriorating mind will end up resulting in a deteriorating body anyway.
68. Before you make a call, do you rehearse what you are going to say?
Mostly yes. Helps me feel more confident in whatever I'm making the call about.
69. What are you most grateful for?
That I don't live in Australia, because everything wants to kill you.
70. What’s the most essential part of a friendship?
Trust. Knowing you can trust the other person.
71. When was the last time you sang to yourself or to someone else?
The last time I was in the car alone. ๐Ÿ˜Š
72. If you knew you were going to die in a year, what would you change about how you live?
I like to think I'd get closer to God, since I knew I'd be meeting Him in person soon. ๐Ÿ˜Š Other than that, I'd probably try to keep things as normal as possible. When stressed or upset, I like to stick to a routine, since it's one of the things I can control. And near the end of that year, I'd check what I could off my bucket list.
73. When was the last time you walked for more than an hour?
Last year when I was in New York City. No...in December when I was in Denver. I walked through the Denver Botanic Garden's Blossom of Lights. I spent a little more than an hour walking around, taking pictures and freezing to death.
74. What did you do for (last holiday)? Or What will you do for (next closest holiday)?
Last big holiday was New Years. I went down to Kansas City with a friend to stay with some other friends. We hung out a couple days and then went to a bar in Zona Rosa for NYE, played board games and drinking until just after midnight.
75. Best and worst flavor ice cream? What would make for an excellent new ice cream flavor?
Best Ice cream: chocolate chip cookie dough...or peanut butter fudge. I can't think of a worst, because I have good taste and never choose bad flavors. ๐Ÿ˜Ž New flavor - Mint with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
76. Who’s your favorite actor or actress?
So many great ones to choose from...Christian Bale and Sandra Bullock are the first two who come to mind. They're people I'd watch movies specifically because they're in it.
77. All modesty aside, what are you better at than 90% of people? It doesn’t have to be useful or serious, it can be something ridiculous.
Gift giving. I'm a really good gift giver. I've had some spectacular misses and ideas that didn't work out, but most of the time I find gifts that are very person-specific that I know they'll like.
78. What’s the strangest phone conversation you’ve ever had?
I've had plenty of strange calls at work with crazy people...but on a personal call, I can't think of any strange ones. Long ones, for sure. I think my record is almost 5 hours?
79. How much personal space do you need to be comfortable?
The better I know someone, the less of a "bubble" I have, but at least two feet if you're standing in front of me, I think. Preferably a bit more. Gives me some room to breathe if we're standing around talking. I'm a naturally cuddly person, so if we're talking about close friends and sitting around watching a movie, I don't mind an overcrowded couch.
80. What’s the most interesting fact you know?
That Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in WWII and went on to play himself in the biopic "To Hell and Back."
81. What fad or trend have you never been able to understand?
Kale. Just...why?! It tastes like dirt. Why would you voluntarily choose to eat something that tastes like dirt?!
82. Who’s your favorite character from a TV show, movie, or book?
Jane Eyre. She was strong, loving, caring and had an excellent sense of self-worth.
83. What TV shows did you watch when you were a kid?
Wishbone, Arthur and Magic School Bus.
84. What do you like but are kind of embarrassed to admit?

Twilight (the book series, not the movies) and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie. Shut up.
85. What’s your favorite smell?
Chocolate chip cookies in the oven. Or almost anything with cinnamon or garlic in it (but not together...bleh).
86. What skill or ability have you always wanted to learn?
Being able to play the guitar.
87. What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?
Gosh, I can't think of just one. I'm sure it involved pasta of some kind. ๐Ÿ˜
88. Where was your favorite place to go when you were a kid?
I loved visiting San Francisco, specifically Pier 39. I love the smell, the little tourist trap shops and the two story merry-go-round (I'm a big fan of carousels).
89. What’s the most amount of people you had to present something in front of?
I don't know an exact number, but over 100. I was on a panel of homeshcoolers who work in government speaking to a group for Christian Homeschoolers Legislative Day.
90. If you could go back in time as an observer, no one could see you, and you couldn’t interact with anything, when would you want to go back to?
I'd love to go back and watch my folk's interactions the first 2-3 days during/after they met. I'm curious how things unfolded, since I've heard the stories for so long. It would also be interesting to see their younger selves, since I'm currently in between their two ages (in 1980).
91. What’s something that most people haven’t done, but you have?
Climbed a glacier. On a family trip to Canada, dad and I walked up a glacier. We were so high altitude-wise that I had trouble breathing (this was before I had official trouble breathing). I was also kissed by a killer whale on my birthday at Marine World Africa USA.
92. What says the most about a person?
What their car looks like (make/model, condition, etc)...and how they treat waitstaff.
93. What machine or appliance in your house aggravates you the most?
The Duomo, Milan
The dryer, because most times the laundry has to run through it twice, which throws off your timing if you have something in the washer. So annoying.
94. What places have you visited that exceeded your expectations?
The Duoma in Milan. It was my favorite church in Italy (don't tell St. Peter's on me). I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked New York City. I hate dealing with crowds and pushy people, so I expected to hate it...but I genuinely enjoy the energy, tall buildings and how much you can do and see. Also the good food and so much in the way of culture (music, theatre, museums).

95. If you opened a business, what type of business would you start?
A "wellness center" for those struggling with mental health issues. I'd partner with a humane society to have puppies and kittens available for people to spend time with, allowing for an option to adopt. Who doesn't feel better after playing with a bunch of puppies? ๐Ÿถ
96. What’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen?
Oof...that's probably a toss up between The Happening and The Last Airbender. They Came Together is also a contender.

97. What’s the best road trip you’ve been on?
Tootling around Ireland. We went for my folks 35th wedding anniversary. I just navigated, but it was a bit harrowing being in a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car, driving on the wrong side of the road!
98. If you found a briefcase filled with 1 million in 100$ bills in front of your door, what would you do with it?
I like to think I'd take it to the police, letting them know I found it. If it goes unclaimed for a certain amount of time, finders keepers, right? ๐Ÿ˜Š
99. What’s the worst advice someone has given you?
I can't think of anything spectacularly terrible. "You shouldn't wear a thumb ring. Guys don't like that" and "You should get pregnant before you're 35. Otherwise it's a geriatric pregnancy" (or something to that affect) are the only two that come to mind.

Just a heads up, you're only about half way through the post at this point.

100. Besides your home and your work, where do you spend most of your time?
Probably the Pynes house and Marcus Theaters. ๐Ÿก
101. If you could have the answer to any one question, what question would you want the answer to?
That's too much pressure! I'm having a total Chidi moment here!
102. What are your top 3 favorite things to talk about?
Books, movies and music.
103. What do you care least about?
Apple products. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I also don't care about most sports - teams, players or scores. If I'm listening to you talk about it, I care about you, not the sport. Even then I might be cursing at you in my head for having to make the effort.
104. Where would you like to retire?
Denver...or Palm Springs. My grandparents used to spend a month in Palm Springs every year, so it's synonymous with "retirement" to me. ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒต
105. Who is the most bizarre person you’ve met?
A strip joint owner named Shane. He was everything you'd expect and more...a flashy, cheesy dresser and felt like a stereotypical used car salesman with extra sides of sleazy and creeper. (shudder)
106. What are people often surprised to learn about you?
That I've never been to Mexico...because (points to self) Mexican.
107. Would you rather live full time in an RV or full time on a sailboat?
I think an RV. Gives you more options, since you can always drive an RV onto a ferry. ๐Ÿšข
108. What would you do with the extra time if you never had to sleep?
Read...watch TV...maybe cook? Honsestly, I'd likely decide to sleep anyway, even though I didn't have to. ๐Ÿ˜ด
109. When you were a kid, what seemed like the best thing about being a grown up?
No school/homework! Being able to make your own decisions also seemed exciting. I joke you know you're an adult when you can have a cookie for breakfast and no one can stop you. ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐Ÿช
110. What’s the strangest way you’ve become friends with someone?
Probably meeting a friend-of-a-friend at prom. In the months following prom, a few of us kept hanging out and our friendship grew from there.
111. What’s your go-to series or movie when you want to watch something but can’t find anything to watch?
How I Met Your Mother and Two Weeks Notice.
112. What were some of the turning points in your life?
Not taking an Administrative Aide job at the Capitol freshman year of college and then taking an Administrative Aide job after I graduated college.
113. What companies made you so mad that you would rather suffer bodily harm than give them any more of your money?
I've been boycotting Target for a few years. Last year Massage Envy got added to the list.
114. What small things brighten up your day when they happen?
Someone bringing me coffee (regular or froofoo, like a white chocolate mocha). Or a donut. Coffee & a donut are pretty much guaranteed to make my day. Also flowers.
115. What sports would be funniest if the athletes had to be drunk while playing?
Probably football. There are a lot of players on the field, so between people tripping over each other and trying to hand off or throw the ball, I can see it being a entertaining fiasco.
116. What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve done because you were bored?
Written a blog. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
117. If you could send one letter to yourself in the past without the goal of making yourself rich (no lotto numbers, stock picks, etc.), what age would you choose and what would the letter say?
I'd send my 18 year old self a letter, telling myself to take the AA job with then Senator Foley (now Lt. Gov. Foley)...and for heavens sake, put more money in savings, woman!
118. How many other countries have you visited?
Canada, Ireland, England, Italy, San Marino and the Vatican...so six other countries.

119. What’s your favorite band NAME (not necessarily your favorite band)?
Mouse Rat, from Parks and Rec. ๐Ÿญ
120. What do you miss about life 10 or 20 years ago?
Life was a lot simpler 10 and 20 years ago.
121. What’s your favorite holiday?
Halloween. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I love figuring out a costume and dressing up.
122. What’s getting worse and worse as you get older? What’s getting better and better as you get older?
Taxes get worse...so do general aches and pains. As you get older, you start falling apart, man. Your sense of self gets better as you get older, as does your confidence. Actually living offers experience and with that comes knowledge, so when making decisions you're basing them on personal experiences, instead of guesswork and hypotheticals.
123. Where’s the best place in (your town or city) to have a picnic?
Probably Sunken Gardens...either that or Antelope Park. There are a couple picnic-able places down in the Haymarket too, which would be nice because you could grab a drink somewhere beforehand or ice cream after.
124. What’s your favorite thing to do outdoors? How about indoors?
Shopping, for both. ๐Ÿ˜ I love being in the mountains, so walking or horseback riding in them in pretty great. Traveling and sightseeing are also great things to do outdoors...as is laying on a beach tanning. Indoors...reading somewhere comfy or attending a concert are two great things to do indoors.
125. How often do you dance? Silly/ironic dancing counts.
I'm not much of a random dancer. There's an occasional car or kitchen dance, if the right music is on.
126. What do you never get tired of?
Coffee. Or music. ♫
127. What habit do you wish you could start?
Exercising. It's much easier to accomplish when it's routine.
128. What’s the best way to get to know who someone really is?
That's a tough one. To "really know someone," I think you need to see them in different scenarios. Anyone can have a bad day...or a really good one where they handle things better than they normally would. To really know someone, I think you need to see how they treat waitstaff, around their family, your friends and in a situation where they should put someone else's needs before theirs (group project/decision/an event where someone else is in the spotlight). That would give you a well rounded view of a person. You could also check their playlist or most listened to songs...that says a lot about a person. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
129. What’s the last new thing you tried?
A spicy California poke bowl at Grey Whale Poke Bowl.
130. Who besides your parents taught you the most about life?
I can't think of a specific person. Seeing my family and friends go through life and the vastly different situations they've been in and how they handled them helped me learn a lot about life.
131. When are you the most “you” that you can be? In other words, when do you feel most like yourself?
When I'm with someone I'm comfortable enough to wear my pajamas around. ๐Ÿ˜Š I can be excitable and passionate, talkative and engaging when I'm not "on alert" or overly concerned about other people think of me. The more comfortable and relaxed I am, the more me I can be.
132. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done?
Deciding to spend New Years 2018 in Denver.
133. What’s happening now, that in 20 years people will look back on and laugh about?
Baby Yoda memes. So many Baby Yoda memes. ๐Ÿ’—
134. How much social interaction is too much?
It really depends on the situation. If it's a large group or party, an hour is generally my enjoyment threshold. If it's one to a few friends whose company I enjoy, I'm good to go for hours.
135. How different do you act when you are with acquaintances vs. people you are comfortable with?
Fairly different. I'm not shy, but I'm generally a lot quieter around people who are just acquaintances, tend to just "people watch" and do a lot of listening. When with people I'm comfortable around, I'm more engaging and will participate or encourage conversation.
136. On a weekend or holiday, what’s the best time of day and the best time of night?
Best time of day is PM, ie. I was not awake for AM...and the best time of night is around 8pm. You've probably gotten everything done that you're going to work on that day, so you have time to sit back and relax for a bit.
137. What are you looking forward to that’s happening soon?
The end of session on April 23rd...and then a "formal attire required" masquerade on April 25th. It'll be a great way to celebrate the end of session. I may have already bought a dress for it.
138. What really cheesy song do you love?
"I want it that way" by The Backstreet Boys
(omg, I just rewatched the music video...their clothes are so bad ๐Ÿ˜‚)
139. What’s the worst or best job you’ve had?
I've had some rough babysitting gigs, but the worst job was probably at Sears. I worked there for a whole two weeks, I think? It was such a mess...no one in management knew what was going on and I finally decided I was over it. I think that was between my freshman and sophomore year of college.
140. What’s been the most significant plot twist in your own life?
Hmm...I suppose this counts. When I was 14, we went on vacation in the Midwest and ended up staying the night in Nebraska City on my 15th birthday. When we got back to Folsom, I celebrated my birthday with a friend a week late...during which a realtor showed up with a couple hoping to see our house (which was due to come off the market in the next few weeks). That resulted in an offer and my flying with mom to Lincoln to house hunt. After looking at 55 houses in 3 days, we found "the one" our last day and, less than two months after that fateful night in Nebraska City, we went from being Californians to Nebraskans, stranded in a (very nice) hotel from Dec. 17th til sometime past Christmas (I don't remember what day we actually moved into the house).
141. Where did you take family vacations to when you were younger?
We took a lot of road trips all over, but one constant was a week or so in Palm Springs in February. My grandparents would spend a month there, so we'd drive down from Folsom to spend time with them.
142. What’s your go-to funny story?
I...don't think I have one.
143. If the company you work for / the college you go to had an honest slogan, what would it be?
"Welcome back to Whose Line Is It Anyway, where everything's made up and the points don't matter."
144. If you could instantly receive a Ph.D. in any discipline including all the knowledge and experience that goes along with it, what would your Ph.D. be in?
Wow. Hmm...probably involving psychology. A Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology, maybe? I'd contemplated majoring in psychology in college, but at Benedictine you were required to take a Calculus class, which instantly took it out of the running.
145. How well do you cope when you don’t have your phone with you for an extended period of time?
I manage alright. I bugs me, because I worry about missing something or that I left it somewhere, but I'm pretty good at pushing it to the back of my mind. If I don't have it, I don't have it and worrying/being anxious about it isn't doing to make it magically appear.
Josh Groban concert, 2018
146. What were some of the happiest times of your life so far?
I had a pretty happy childhood...so that or a Josh Groban concert. ๐Ÿ˜Š
147. Would you rather have an incredibly fast car or incredibly fast internet speed?
Incredibly fast internet speed. I'd use that way more often...though a super fast car would be pretty awesome.
148. What are the top three social situations you try to avoid most?
Large parties where I don't know most of the people, anything contentious (no me gusta confrontation) or "get to know you" events.
149. What friendship you’ve had has impacted you the most?
In a positive way...a group friendship, actually. Maryann, Brandon, Bill and I have had a lot of fun hanging out, traveling (Minnapolis and Chicago), attending at least 6 Goo Goo Dolls concerts and maybe 10 New Years Eves together.
150. What’s something you’re interested in that most people wouldn’t expect?
I dunno...graphic design? I enjoy creating invitations, announcements, etc. A friend just celebrated their 30th birthday and I helped his sister create an announcement, Facebook event cover and a couple signs to put up at the party.
151. What’s your favorite quote or saying?
"Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde
(Yes, I know Oscar probably didn't say it, but I still like it.)

152. If you had the power to change one law, what law would you change?
I would outlaw abortion and simultaneously establish more health clinics with services to help expectant & new mothers, as well as their children, both medical and social services related.
153. What’s the hardest you’ve worked for something?
Recently, finding a way for a senator to bring legislation to ban pelvic exams on unconscious or anesthetized patients without their explicit consent. Last month I spent hours researching it as a problem and what other states have passed to prevent such practices. Unfortunately we weren't able to bring a bill this year, but hopefully it's something we can introduce and pass next session.

In case you're interested in going down this rabbit hole with me, here are a few particularly informative articles.

154. What took you way too long to figure out?
Life...and I'm still figuring it out. ๐Ÿ˜ Other than that...how to pronounce "quinoa."
155. What nicknames have you had throughout your life?
Katie and Kate, though those are just short for Kathryn and not really nicknames. Otherwise, Squitto. A friend used to call me that because of my email address (squittio.topo). ๐Ÿ˜Š
156. What do you do differently than most people?
I keep my Facebook and Instagram private! The whole world doesn't need to know my business.
157. Where’s the last place you’d ever go?
China. Or a strip club. Or a strip club in China.
158. What fact floored you when you heard it?
That 1990 is as far away from 2020 as 2050. That's just ridiculous. 1990 was just the other day...right?!  ๐Ÿ˜ณ
159. If you unexpectedly won $10,000, what would you spend it on?
That would fund my Iceland trip...and a cruise or two. I've always wanted to go on a cruise. Ooh, it would be enough for the New Zealand and Fuji trip. That...I'd do that. ๐ŸŒด
160. Who is the best role model a person could have?
Jane Eyre! ๐Ÿ˜ If you're looking for a serious answer, there are innumerable saints who would serve as excellent role models. The specific one kind of depends on personal preference, where you are in life, what they're the patron of or where they're from, etc.

Our Best First Date Conversation Starters:

Are you working on any personal passion projects?
Better than “What are your hobbies?”, though it also feels a bit pretentious, lol. Researching for patient consent bill is something I am passionate about and worked on a lot the last month. Low key - some friends started a "Jane Austen Book Club" because one of them is trying to read all of Austin's books this year. Not falling behind as we work through Austin's books is important to me! Right now we're reading Persuasion.
Surprise Tico's flowers!

What’s the best present you ever gave someone? Ever received?
Best received has always been the little things, since those tend to better show the level of thoughtfulness of the gift-giver. Some examples...maybe 6-7 years ago I posted on Facebook about how tired I was and that I'd love someone to bring me a latte (white chocolate mocha?), totally kidding and just expressing my exhaustion to cyberspace...and a coworker showed up with one for me. It was awesome. Three years ago when a friend went out to lunch with some coworkers on Valentine's Day, the restaurant they chose was giving away carnations with each plate. He decided to bring theirs back to the office for me, just to brighten my day. ๐ŸŽ• And most recently, my mom bought me a small print I'd put on my Christmas list. She thought it was too tiny to give me as an official present (it's 3"x4"), but it was exactly what I wanted, so I was really happy. It's sitting on my office desk as we speak. ๐Ÿ’—
The purple one was my favorite.

I'm not sure what the best present I've given have been. Matt was super excited when I got him Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PS3 shortly after it came out. Muppet's Monopoly was enthusiastically received. Oooh!! The Ireland trip for my folks 35th anniversary. That's got to be near the top of the list...at least I hope so! ๐Ÿ˜Š☘

What does a typical day look like for you?
Not a bad twist on “What do you do?”
I start my mornings with 20 minutes of stretching (since injuring my back), then get dressed, brush my teeth, etc and grab coffee on my out the door. At work my day consists of answering the phone, scheduling meetings, replying to emails and letters, prepping bill files for hearings and floor debate, answering questions via a variety of mediums and making lots of coffee. :) After work I head home, change into my pajamas, help make and then eat dinner while watching MasterChef, Bull, Last Man Standing or The Rookie. If I have any projects to get done before the end of the day (folding laundry, writing thank you notes, write and/or publish a blog post, picking out what I need to wear the next day, etc), I do those before heading downstairs to watch something on my own. Once I hear dad head to bed, I join mom to watch an episode of Frasier before heading upstairs, prepping for bed (don't forget to take Clariting D!) and then read for 15-30 minutes before turning out my light and going to sleep.

I was reading this _____ and they said____.
This is worded a little oddly, but I think they're shooting for creating conversation around what you and they are currently reading. Favorite books work too. I think you can learn a fair bit about someone from what they like to read...or if they aren't big readers. At the moment I'm reading Jane Austen's Persuasion as part of a JA book club.

Is there anything you don’t eat?
Oh yes...and kale is top of list. ๐Ÿ˜ There are plenty of things I'd rather not eat, but few I'd straight up refuse. That being said, I've been staying away from sesame oil after an allergy reaction to it and wouldn't eat any animal served with a head on it (fish, crawfish, etc)...or brains of any kind. ๐Ÿคฎ

What sort of vacations do you like to take?
I'm always up for talking about travel! The last couple of years I've been lucky enough to travel to Ireland and England, as well as multiple trips to Denver and NYC. Almost all of those were "trips," as opposed to "vacations." To me, vacations are when you sit back, relax and unwind/recharge, as opposed to sightseeing and having lots to do on your schedule. One of the reasons I'd like to go on a cruise is because that would be a vacation, a break from everyday routine with lots of sleep, opportunities to read and tan, and the ability to do a couple fun things like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, if you're so inclined.

Anything surprising happen today?
I don't have a lot of surprises pop up anymore...other than the crazy conspiracy theorist who called about the drone situation in western Nebraska. Did you know that the governor of Kansas was briefed about what's going on by the Feds, but had to sign an NDA, which this guy found out about from "reliable third party internet sources"? ๐Ÿ™„

Tell me about your closest friends.
I do think this is a good question. It allows you to hear how the other person speaks about their friends and what kind of people they choose to spend their time around.
This one is a little tricky for me to answer without some caveats. There's a difference between close friends and good friends; while both groups are people I'd drop everything for if they needed something, I have different levels of comfort when it comes to spending time with or sharing what's going on in my life with them. Geographic limitations are part of it, since spending actual time together definitely contributes to my feeling comfortable around people. All that is to say my closest friends are the ones I trust, am comfortable around, spend time hanging out with and feel able to share what's going on in my life.

What were you like as a kid?
Fun. ๐Ÿ˜Š I was fairly athletic, reasonably outgoing, smart and...yeah, fun. I enjoyed playing soccer and basketball (softball was ok), and loved to travel. I was pretty game for anything, including holding a small, wild snake someone caught in a river we were playing in...or being one of 6-8 kids helping hold up part of a giant anaconda at a zoo demonstration. Actually, I would hold or pet pretty much any animal (no bugs, thank you!)...some examples that come to mind are cuddling a baby skunk and playing with a baby tiger at a petting zoo in Oregon, getting a squirrel to climb up my leg by luring it with food, conversing with a marmot in Yellowstone and feeding grey jays somewhere in Canada! Don't believe me? I have photographic evidence! ๐Ÿ˜

Grey jays in Canada!

Squirrel in...somewhere. ๐Ÿ˜„
Hanging out with a marmot in Yellowstone.

Even mini-me was on board with animals in petting zoos!

I’ve been watching ____ and love it. Have you seen any good movies or TV shows lately?
I just finished The Good Place. While it's not flawless, it's an interesting, entertaining sitcom that had the integrity to decide to end after 4 season because it had told the story it set out to tell. I was just reading through the trivia on IMDB, which has some gems if you're familiar with the show.

Bonus:
Which fictional character do you relate to the most?
Iris from The Holiday. She's a talented, strong woman who made some questionable choices when it came to love and by the end of the movie finally has realized her self-worth to the point of displaying gumption. ๐Ÿ˜Š
Have you been to any good restaurants recently?
I went with a friend to Hiro88 for dinner the other night. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal there.
Do you have any pet peeves?
Poor table manners/food noises, slow turners (I hate having to come to a complete stop just because a car decides to make a turn at 2 mph), people reading over my shoulder, and being interrupted are some that come to mind.

A lot of the questions on this full list were the same as above (the 160 question list), so I just pulled some of the new ones. Would You Rather are actually a good idea for date questions. They're meant to be fun or silly, but they also give you an idea about the other person's priorities.

Would You Rather Questions To Ask On A First Date

120. Would You Rather Have True Love Or Win The Lottery?
True love. The two of you could work to build a good life together...but money can't buy love.

121. Would You Rather Marry A Nice Guy Or A Flirty One?
Pfft, the nice one! I'm assuming he's a genuinely nice guy - thoughtful, kind, dependable - and not a "promising young man" kind of nice guy.

122. Would You Rather Spend 2 Months Living In A Nursing Home Or Spend 2 Weeks Eating Only From Taco Bell?
Two weeks eating only Taco Bell. I figure there's a good chance I'd end up losing weight 'cause I'd get sick of the food and thus eat less...and assume there's too much early morning hustle and bustle in a nursing home.

123. Would You Rather Go To An Amusement Park Or A Family Reunion?
At this point in my life, a family reunion. I haven't seen most of my extended family in a very long time, so it would be good to catch up with everyone.

124. Would You Rather Work Behind A Desk Or With Your Hands?
It depends. If I could make a living as a photographer, then I'd say with my hands. Ditch digger or rodeo pooper-scooper, not so much.

125. Would You Rather Be A Hard Worker Or A Smart Worker?
Work smart. Better to get something done right the first time.

126. Would You Rather Live In A Cabin In Alaska Or On A Tropical Island?
My first thought was Cabin in Alaska because no bugs, but then I remembered a friend who lived in AK said they get giant mosquitoes. Hmm...I think I'll still go with Cabin, since I could more easily survive something terrible happening by some strategic pre-planning there than on a tropical island.

127. Would You Rather Have No Sense Of Smell, Or Have A Sense So Strong You Could Smell Everything Around You Like It Was In Front Of Your Face?
Oh no...both of these are horrible! There are so many gross smells out there, but no sense of smell means your food would lack taste. Ugh. I'd have to go with no sense of smell. I think I'd just walk around gagging all the time otherwise.

128. Would You Rather Go For A Bungee Jump Or Hot Air Balloon Ride?
Hot air balloon, for sure! I don't love heights, but at least you have something around you and, if the weather is nice, it's a peaceful ride.

129. Would You Rather Live For 6 Months In A Light House, Accessible Only By A 3 Mile Boat Ride, Or Live For 6 Months In The Most Crowded Room Of A Youth Hostel?
Super easy choice - 3 months in a light house. I'd literally lose my mind living in a crowded hostel for 6 months...or 3 months...or a week. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

130. Would You Rather Be Able To Stop Time At Will Or Age At Half The Normal Human Rate?
I have a question back - if I age at half the normal human rate, do I live twice as long? Or would I still live the same length of time, but look twice as good as everyone else when I die? Either way, I'd pick the aging option, though I have no desire to live twice as long...I'm just curious about the logistics.

131. Would You Rather Be Confined To Your Home For One Month And Only Able To Communicate With The Outside World Via Fax Machine Or Unable To Go Back To Your Home For 3 Months?
If it was starting right now, this minute...I'd have to say be confined and only use a fax. If I had time to prep and pack, I'd say be unable to go back home for 3 months. It would be way too inconvenient to be without ALL my stuff for 3 months.

132. Would You Rather Have Many Causal Friends Or One Close One?
One close one. It would be too lonely with just casual friends.

133. Would You Rather Have A Mansion Or A Cozy Home That Has Just The Right Amount Of Room?
I'd rather a mansion, as long as someone else did the house cleaning...and paid the property taxes! ๐Ÿ˜† If the house is "just the right amount of room," does that mean it grows as you acquire more stuff? ๐Ÿค”

134. Would You Rather Have An Exotic Meal In A Five-Star Hotel Or A Delicious Chocolate-Cake From A Local Bakery?
I'd rather the exotic meal, though it concerns me that they had to specify "delicious" for the chocolate cake. Is the exotic food not tasty too?

135. Would You Rather Be Someone Else’s First Love Or Their Last Forever?
If I couldn't be both, I'd choose last love.

Yes, there's an Oscar Wilde quote for everything. ๐Ÿ˜Š
"Men always want to be a woman's first love. That is their clumsy vanity. Women have a more subtle instinct about things: What they like is to be a man's last romance." - Oscar Wilde, A Woman of No Importance

Speaking of Oscar, tonight is round two of seeing The Important of Being Earnest at the Lincoln Community Playhouse! ๐Ÿฅฐ

And just to be clear, I didn't spend an inordinate amount of time writing this all in one shot. It took almost 2 weeks of writing, rewriting and editing...and finding just the right pics and memes. So it was just small chunks adding up to an irrational amount of time! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Did any of the questions stand out to you, or that you particularly felt like answering too?

And last but not least, what four word would ruin a first date for you?

  1. Wow! There's so much contained in this post! Thanks for bringing up some wonderful memories and I love the pictures you included. I sure hope the legislation you worked on goes forward next session or that a solution is found to provide protection by some other means. I am so pleased with your efforts on this matter.
Your answer to #157 made me smile. Amen to that! Ha!
