Uuuuugh
When the first commercial for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came out, I ranted all the way through it. I'm pretty sure "what the hell?!" was blurted out a couple times...and "Ben Affleck is not Batman!" innumerable times since. The trailer was dumb and the whole idea is stupid....like Ben Affleck's face!
Uuuugh.
So when I saw they released a new trailer at Comic Con over the weekend, I though "It couldn't get any worse, right? Right?!"
I was wrong.
For the sake of context, Batman is my favorite superhero. I like the fact that's he's an ordinary human...albeit a very smart one with an endless supply of money and cool gadgets/technology. I like the last set of Batman movies (not only for Christian Bale...shut up) because they were a more serious take on the Batman saga. And while this incarnation also looks gritty and dark, it takes a very different turn...a sharp left, down a vein where Batman travels from Gotham to Metropolis to take on this demi-god, Superman. Batman perceives Superman as a threat instead of an ally...even when Alfred tells him that Superman is not our enemy.
And thus I do not approve.
I know there's a story arc where Batman ends up in an alternate timeline where Superman actually is evil, but this ain't it. And I DO NOT LIKE Batman being made out as the antagonist.
I know I'm going to end up seeing the movie in theaters...apparently by myself since my normal movie buddy doesn't want to hear me whine through the entire thing. I don't know how I'm going to make it without booing out loud and/or throwing something at the screen! Ok, maybe I can see why he's making me go alone. :)
In case you haven't seen the latest trailer, here is a link to the atrocity.

The only intriguing part of the entire trailer is that there's a Joker tease. It's really not that hard...he's the real villain, guys! Hugged it out and win the day together! Be the heroes Metropolis both wants and needs!
Expect more complaining before the movie actually comes out...which isn't until March of next year!

P.S. BEN AFFLECK IS NOT BATMAN!
P.P.S. CartoonHooligans put together a Batman v Superman video. I like the conclusion...that would make a better movie. Also the peanut gallery. :)

If you want disaster porn, a murderous sociopath for a Superman, and a RomCom pretty boy for a Batman, please patronize DC at the movie theaters.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a good, clean, fun superhero movie with some humor and good action, please patronize Marvel at the movie theaters.
Marvel > DC
P.S. I'm glad Batman has gotten over his throat cancer.
P.P.S. Is Jeremy Irons playing Alfred?!
P.P.P.S. Zach Snyder is a fool.
It would appear that Jeremy Irons is indeed playing Alfred...which I'm mostly fine with. He's a good actor...but Michael Caine leaves some big shoes to fill.
DeleteTrue.
DeleteI guess I just like the Michael Keaton movies. Especially the one with the Prince music and Jack Nicholson playing the Joker. The original Batman was extremely campy and silly... I like that the Keaton movies strike a balance between that and gratuitous disaster porn.
First and foremost, it's "ally" not "allie".
ReplyDeleteSecondly, there are numerous comics, cartoons, etc that depict Superman and Batman's first encounter to be antagonistic as they don't trust each other until rallied to fight a common enemy (i.e Lex Luthor). It is extremely consistent with Batman's character to view Superman as a threat that should be taken out before he wipes out humanity. This isn't a new concept.
Also, unless it IS Christian Bale, you never like who is playing Batman. Don't pretend otherwise. :P
I was wondering how long it was going to take you to run across this. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst...you're right and I will go change that.
Second...never going to like the concept, particularly in this universe and especially since Batman is my favorite. I don't like him being an asshat.
Lastly...I think you're wrong. Christian Bale is my favorite version and that is definitely because of my bias for him...but I think I would at least be willing to give a strong lead a chance. Ben Affleck is not that. And the commercials aren't helping. And my problem with the older Batman movies is the ridiculousness of them. They didn't find a good balance which somehow the old shows did (at least to some extent). I'm sure there was something lost in translation because of the medium...that TV could pull it off better than a movie. But come on...Val Kilmer as Batman? He's a great Doc Holliday...but he's no Batman.
It isn't about Batman being an asshat...well, okay it is, but this because Batman is kind of an asshat to begin with. His entire persona is about focused rage. As a person, Batman is pretty much an insensitive ass. Sure, he helps people and all of that, but that isn't the main reason why he does what he does. It's all about rage. I mean, you are talking about someone who probably had no real friends growing up other than Alfred, is completely obsessed with the death of his parents, and only really has a public life as Bruce Wayne so that he can continue to fund his fight against the dregs of Gotham and so that no one will link that the billionaire playboy is out beating criminals to a pulp night after night. Batman isn't a light in the darkness for the people of Gotham. He is a desperate man standing at the precipice of incredible darkness. He really isn't the hero that Gotham needs.
DeleteAlso, at the point Superman and Batman cross paths, they really haven't met any other superheroes, since they have stayed in their own cities for the most part. Both of seen people of incredible power and both have seen people misuse that power. So they are going to be incredibly distrustful of each other. And considering that they are both Alpha Male personalities, they are going to naturally come into conflict between each other. THAT isn't about Superman or Batman being an asshat. That is simply about distrust and both thinking that they know better than the other.
Name one other person who has competently played Batman, prior to Christian Bale, in your opinion.
Will Arnet as Batman in The Lego Movie...though technically that's after The Dark Knight saga. :D ;)
DeleteI would have to say Adam West. "Batman" from 1966 is very much it's own thing...and it made no pretense of being more than it was. It was "Boom, Pow" with a side of shark repellent and a hefty dose of "Holy (fill in the blank", Batman!"
A little Batman Trivia...did you know both Mark Harmon and Kyle MacLachlan (The Captain!) voiced Batman? :)
Doesn't count then. :P
DeleteSure, but you can't go can criticize previous Batman movies for being ridiculous if you are going to claim Adam West as a competent Batman. That entire run of Batman (TV show and movie) is campy and hammy as hell.
And I'm sure they were both fantastic. Did you know that Kevin Conroy is the first person to come up with the notion of using 2 separate voices for Batman and Bruce Wayne in non-live action depictions of Batman?
I did not know that. Learn something new every day. :)
