Horror Flicks list

I like scary movies. It's hard to find good ones that aren't either super sketchy or just slasher flicks. I like suspense and the adrenaline rush for being scared (with no actual peril involved). I ran across a list on IMDB that someone put together of 100 Top Horror Movies that included some pretty good titles. I've made list of ones I've seen that I liked, the ones on my "to watch" list and the ones I'd add to the list.

Seen

  1. Jaws (1975) - a classic! Just saw it again in theaters on Wednesday night.
  2. Alien (1979) - another classic!
  3. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - it's crazy that Anthony Hopkins only had 24 minutes and 52 seconds of screen time and he's still one of the best/creepiest villains ever.
  4. Wait Until Dark (1967) - highly underrated Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin movie.
  5. The Orphanage (2007) - A Spanish Guillermo del Toro movie
  6. Se7en (1995) - this one was really good, but I hated the ending.
  7. The Cabin in the Woods (2012) - Another Joss Whedon success.
  8. Zombieland (2009) - another fun horror flick, it has my favorite Bill Murray cameo of all time.
  9. The Blair Witch Project (1999) - this movie is amazingly creepy for having only a $60,000 budget.
  10. Scream (1996) - I remember repeatedly yelling at Drew Barrymore to hang up the damn phone! :)
  11. Poltergeist (1982) - so not a kids movie.
  12. I Am Legend (2007) - I don't know that I'd classify this as a horror flick. Might be more of a thriller?
  13. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) - it's been a while since I read it, but I remember finding it intriguing. And who wouldn't want to see Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as vampires?

To Watch List

  1. The Exorcist (1973)
  2. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  3. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
  4. Carrie (1976)
  5. Halloween (1978)
  6. Psycho (1960)
  7. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
  8. Misery (1990)
  9. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) - how have I never heard of this Bette Davis and Joan Crawford movie?!
  10. 28 Days Later... (2002)
  11. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
  12. [Rec] (2007) - the Spanish inspiration for Quarantine (2008)
  13. Friday the 13th (1980)
  14. The Omen (1976)

Additions

  1. Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) - An amazing musical with a pretty good moral, when you think about it.
  2. 30 Days of Night (2007) - one of my favorite vampire movies.
  3. DayBreakers (2009) - another vampire movie where they're not the good guys.
  4. Hide and Seek (2005) - good psychological thriller. Really like the multiple ending options.
  5. It (1990) - I was surprised at how well this held up.
  6. Let the Right One In (2008) and Let Me In (2010)*
  7. Insidious (2010) - I know there are those who complain that it's basically Poltergeist, but I think it was still pretty solid on its own.
  8. Quarantine (2008)
  9. The Ring (2002) - it's been a really long time since I've seen this, but I remember it being pretty creepy.
  10. The Purge (2013) and The Purge: Anarchy (2014). If The Purge: Election Year (2016) hadn't decided to run with the crazy Christians theme, it would have been the best one of the series. As it was, it felt like a total cop-out and was very disappointing.  Also the spoiled brat princess rich kids got a bit old too.
  11. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - John Goodman does creepy really well.
  12. The Woman in Black (2012) **
  13. The Boy (2016) ** - Pretty good twist I didn't see coming.
  14. The Visit (2016) - other than one scene I could have done without because it was unnecessarily disgusting, I thought it was pretty good.**

Coming out next year
  1. It (2017)
  2. Split (2017) - this new M. Night Shyamalan looks like it has the potential to be a-m-a-z-i-n-g!
  3. Dark Tower (2017) - You had me at Idris Elba.

What good horror flicks would you recommend adding to any of the lists?

As sort of a follow up/tangent to my post about date stalking - with this digital age, it's really weird what you can find about yourself online that you have zero control over. A several years ago a friend of mine was dating a guy who I really didn't like. To clarify, he wasn't a bad guy, per se...he was just wrong for her. And inconsiderate, thoughtless and uber clingy (his nickname may or may not have been Captain Superglue)...but I digress.

Years after they broke up (thank God!), I ran across pictures he posted on FB of my friend and I when they were in town visiting. It really bothered me that there were pictures of me, posted by someone I had no intention of speaking to ever again, and there was nothing I could really do about it. I untagged myself, so at least they were no longer linked to my account, but they probably still exist, floating around cyberspace.

While those photos are innocuous unto themselves, I guess it's just something to keep in mind...that when people poke around for information about you, they could run across things that you didn't post or had no control over.

On that note, Happy Friday and have a good weekend!

* The 2010 version is the English remake of the first, which is in Swedish.
** Maybe more of an honorable mention. While not fantastic, I thought it was worth seeing.

  1. I really hate horror movies, though I do like Alien and Jaws, but I love thrillers. Flight Plan w/ Jodie Foster is one of my favorites. :)

    1. I like thrillers too. Flightplan is really good. So is Red Eye with Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy, as far as plane movies go. M. Night Shyamalan movies (other than The Happening and Avatar: The Last Airbender) are good thrillers too.
