Memorial Day

Funeral procession for Ofc. Kerrie Orozco.

In the spirit of Memorial Day, I wanted to post a short tribute for a couple law enforcement officers who were killed in the last few days.

Today was the funeral for Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco. She was shot while serving a warrant and died shortly thereafter. She had just returned from maternity leave after the birth of her first child, Olivia Ruth. Archbishop George Lucas offered the funeral Mass, which was attended by hundreds of people who showed up to show their support and appreciation for Officer Orozco and the whole Omaha Police Department. There were several pictures posted of high school age students holding signs along the route to the cemetery that said "Roses are red, Police are Blue, Orozco Family we're here for you." I was so glad there was a great turn out. I would have liked to attend and help block Officer Orozco's family from the Westboro Baptists who decided to picket the funeral...but with the legislature still in session, I couldn't very well leave work.

Cadet Taylor Thyfault
A state away in Colorado another tragedy occurred involving law enforcement. When evading arrest, a fleeing Honda plowed through an unrelated accident, striking and killing 21 year old Colorado State Patrol cadet Taylor Thyfault. Another officer, Trooper Clinton Rushing was injured but expected to recover. A third victim was spared due to Cadet Thyfault shouting for the tow truck driver to stay out of the road. The Honda hit Trooper Rushing first and then Cadet Thyfault before landing in a field.

Both stories are tragic in the truest sense of the word. Please keep both Officer Orozco and Cadet Thyfault in your prayers, as well as their families and coworkers.

Eternal rest grant unto them, oh Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Amen.
