Life Lessons from Literature

I love Jane Eyre. LOVE. It's one of my top 3 favorite books (tied with the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo and Picture of Dorian Gray). So I feel qualified to argue with lesson #6 on this handy little list.

Love is not more important than anything else. As Jane proved by leaving the man she loved because he was still married, her self respect was more important. She would not betray herself by doing that which she knew was wrong. It's one of the reasons I love her character. She is the epitome of a strong woman. She knew her worth and would not settle for less.

If you've never read Jane Eyre, I would give it my highest recommendation. The story is engaging and the life lessons pertinent. It provides perspective without preaching and, given its length, in depth characters that you feel you know personally by the end. Filled with intrigue, mystery, romance and forbidden love...ooh, and fire...how could it not be a classic well worth your time to read? :)

Happy 199th birthday, Charlotte Bronte. Thank you for your amazing contribution to literature!
