ReStore

Tomorrow is zero hour...the first day of the 104th Legislature, First Session...which means life is crazy and harried at the moment, with little to actually report. So I give you penguins...and an interesting joint venture between Habitat for Humanity and Home Depot!

On the Cheap

Find bargain home goods at ReStore

A funny noise is one thing. But when our washing machine started spewing gallons of soapy water, it was time to face the music. Cue sticker shock: Seriously, have you shopped for appliances lately?

Rather than pay full price, we headed to Lincolnwood to look for deals at ReStore, Habitat for Humanity’s just-opened warehouse for buying building supplies and appliances at steep discounts.

Think of ReStore as part Home Depot, part thrift store. Inside the massive space you’ll find everything you need to build and decorate a house: cabinets, lighting, furniture, plumbing fixtures, the works.
The items are either new or gently used, and the prices are just right: Ten gorgeous wooden kitchen cabinets for $200, stylish bar stools for $75 and--the Holy Grail--a Whirlpool washing machine for $275.
As if the deals aren’t incentive enough, 100 percent of ReStore’s proceeds go to building homes at Habitat for Humanity’s current Chicago sites in the West Pullman neighborhood. (You can also donate your own unwanted home goods--it’s tax-deductible and there’s free pickup service.)
Now we just need our handyman neighbor to hook us up with installation.

Well, wish me luck the next couple of days. I'll be back on Friday, with stories of the insanity that generally ensues the first couple of days of session!
