One of the best parts about getting a new governor - other than desperately needing a new one and the fact that Pete Rickett's will be amazing, along with his Lt. Governor, Mike Foley - is that there will be a formal Inaugural Gala Dinner and Dance!
I first attended a governor's inauguration ball back when I was in high school. Well, not so much attended as volunteered to escort people to their tables or tell them where the bathrooms were. I did, however, get to dress in formal wear to do so. It is also where I met Noelle (Badeer) Petersen...who my mom spotted as a fellow homeschooler due to her elegant and modest attire. Good job representing, Noelle!!
This time around, I will be attending as a "ticket holding, reception enjoying, dinner and dessert eating, perhaps even dancing" adult. As a "black tie optional" event, I shall once again be donning formal wear...though it will not be my own. I decided to finally take Renttherunway.com for a spin and order a couple dresses for this event!
If you're never heard of them, Rent the Runway is a company that rents out designer attire that most women could never, ever afford. It's a neat way to be able to wear something special and expensive, without having to invest an entire paycheck or two into a dress you're probably only going to wear once. Below are the two dresses I decided to order.

The Laurel Dress by Marchesa Notte (left) is technically my "first choice," but in reality is my "back up dress. Since it's the more expensive the two dresses, it's automatically the "top pick," which allows you to order it in two sizes (second size is free). I think it's gorgeous...my taste tend to run classic with a twist, and this seems to fit that category nicely. The black and gold look elegant and feminine, while being different enough that no one else in the room will likely be wearing anything quite like it.
They let you pick a second dress at a discounted price, just in case the first one doesn't work out. The Ivy Gown by Badgley Mischka (right) is my "back up" dress, but my personal first choice to wear that night. There are few formal events that I am able to attend, even fewer where a floor length gown would be considered appropriate...so I'm planning to take advantage of this opportunity (assuming the dress fits!). :)
Since both of these are sleeveless dresses, this basically means I need to start working out my arms like a crazy person between now and January 10th!
TGIF!

P.S. I would also like to announce the birth of Hunter James Murphy. He is my cousin Bobby's kid, born on Nov. 17th, weighing a healthy 8lb 6oz.
Bob's the first of the cousins on that side of my family to have a baby. And boy is he stinkin' cute!
Look at that smile!
Those little cheeks!
Just love it. :)
