Movie Review: Only Lovers Left Alive

When I first heard this movie was coming out, the thought of Tom Hiddleston as a vampire made me giggle. Loki, a vampire? Works for me! :) Ultimately I'm not sure who was my favorite, him or Tilda Swinton. She was amazing as always. Also, I'm pretty sure she's actually a vampire...I just looked her up on IMDB and she was born in 1960, which makes her 54. But the woman never ages! Yup...she's a vampire. Now I'm sure of it.

Ironically called Adam and Eve, this pair of centuries old vampires are as different as your average couple. Eve is caring and sees the beauty in everything around her, while Adam is a melancholy and broody musician - as a good emo vampire should be. :)  Eve had been living in Tangier and Adam in Detroit, until during a phone call Eve could tell Adam was darker than usual and agreed to fly out to be with him. Their blissful reunion is interrupted by the appearance of Eve's wild little sister, Ava (Mia Wasikowska).

Only Lovers Left Alive is a weird, artsy little film...which is something I really enjoy from time to time. The thing I liked best about this movie is the relationship between Eve and Adam. They reall dig each other. They are just so into each other and not in an overly sexual way. The token nude scene isn't even something I am too annoyed about. It's not a sex scene...they're literally just lying in bed asleep the night Eve arrives in Detroit. It's a little awkward, granted...but it felt like it was to show how comfortable they are with each other, that they just like being together. They're always holding hands, leaning on each other, smiling at each other. They just enjoy each other...appreciate each other...even though they are very different from each other. And it's really sweet.

You've been warned about the nude scene - you can see it coming and it's an aerial shot that lasts for about 10 seconds - and there's a fair bit of profanity, but that's about it. Otherwise it's a simple, interesting story about a relationship between two people...who happen to be vampires. :)

Enjoy and happy Friday!

P.S. This is a wee bit late due to running around today, getting ready to head down to KC for the Goo Goo Dolls/Daughtry concert! More on that come Tuesday! :)
