Last Friday Night

No, not the song (although I admit it is catchy as hell)...but more of a "life experience" that didn't really turn into anything, but that I felt like blogging about anyway. :)

So, I was driving home around 12:30am from hanging out with Bill on Friday night when a cop pulled behind me at 66th and Holdrege. It always makes me nervous when a cop is driving behind me...and now I have every reason to feel that way and am not just paranoid!

All of a sudden there are two bright white flashes of light and then the revolving colored lights flickered on. I moved into the right lane and pulled over to the side of the road.

Dang it!

Were my lights on? Yes.
Were my brights on? Nope.
Was I speeding? Haha...no. As soon as I saw the cop, I slowed to about 3 mph below the speed limit (from going the actual speed limit).
Did I go through a red light? Nope...the lights had all been green for the last half mile.

Why the heck did he pull me over?

I rolled down my window as the cop approached. I felt badly for the guy (it was a dude) because it was misty out, making it damp and cold. He walked up and said he was Officer Sam and asked if I had a bill of sale or the registration for my car. I have yet to take my car in to pay the registration and get new plates, but I have until April something to do that...so no registration. I reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a giant envelope full of paperwork, which had my insurance & a mountain of random sheets of paper from trading in my Lancer and getting the Outlander (I never throw anything away). I told him it was a lease, so I didn't think I had a bill of sale...but we found the equivalent for a lease pretty quickly and then he said I was good and could be on my way.

I waited till he got back to the cruiser, then put my car in drive and pulled away...watching him make a u-turn and head back the opposite direction as I continued home.

I am now 2/2 for being pulled over and having done nothing wrong! The last time was in my Eclipse, when the cop through my registration had expired (but it hadn't). That time was funny because I'm pretty sure he'd been following me for at least a block before I noticed there was a police car with its lights on behind me, because he had pulled up so closely behind me, all I could see in my rear view mirror was the grill of his SUV...until he backed off and I could see the ominous blue and red lights swirling around atop his car.

Whew. Anyway...no tickets for me! (knock on wood)

I have gotten two warnings for parking too close to the corner/intersession, but those were a) two cars ago and b) they don't count as ticket-tickets because cause I didn't have to pay a fine for them. :)

Matt's assessment of the situation was that the cop pulled me over to see if I was intoxicated and used my lack of real plates as an excuse...which is fine with me since I hadn't had a drink all night (which is fortunate, considering it had been "one of those days/weeks").

So that is my unexciting tale of the uneventful weekend!

Enjoy and happy Tuesday!

  1. I heard a rumor that most people commit traffic violations every four blocks. I guess cops figure if they follow you long enough, you'll do something stupid. :) Which, is probably actually true for most of us.. :D :D I'm with you, though, last few times I've been pulled over, no ticket!! Yeah!
