As a hopeless romantic, I have a love-hate relationship with Valentine's Day...I hate it now, with the long term intention of loving at some point down the road.
When I say that I hate Valentine's Day, it's in a rather passive sense. I don't rail against the people who gush about their love, happiness and significant others on Facebook...granted, as a single person it is annoying, but I acknowledging their right to do so and only slightly begrudge them their gushiness.
What I hate is the "holiday depression" that accompanies Valentine's Day when you're "flying solo." I mean, sure...I'd love to get flowers or jewelry and go out for a romantic dinner...who wouldn't? But it's more that I wish I had a reason to celebrate...and I hate the very public reminder that once again, another year later, I'm still single with no romantic attachments. Nothing's changed and it's still just me. I know...things will fall together when they're meant to, blah, blah, blah. Doesn't really help things right now.
My solution? Be proactive about it and plan something fun for the evening in order to distract from all the happy couples, flowers, chocolate and general lovey-dovey-ness. I typically rope in a single friend and go out to dinner (this year Hiro 88 down in the Railyard) and maybe watch a movie (something with lots of explosions - last year we saw A Good Day to Die Hard, which was terrible btw)...just something. I figure it's better than sitting at home having a pity party and wallowing in my unhappiness about the situation. And it's an excuse to dress up and look pretty, which is always a plus. :)
So to all you happy couples out there...Happy Valentine's Day! <3
To everyone else, happy Friday!
