Movie Review: Frozen
I like kids/animated movies. I'll admit it. They are cute, entertaining and enjoyable. I'd seen commercials for Frozen over the last couple of months and was a little worried about it, since it's strictly Disney & not a Disney-Pixar collaboration...but I have to give Disney a mental pat on the back for doing a good job all on their lonesome! :)
This is essentially a story about two sisters and finding true love...though not in the ways you'd necessarily expect. The movie opens with an adorable scene when Anna & Elsa are little girls and Anna is trying to get Elsa to play with her in the middle of the night. We learn that Elsa has special powers to create cold, ice and snow - we're not told how or why, though I assumed it was genetic since her father has the same abilities. The two girls have a grand ol' time turning the great hall into a winter wonderland...until an accident nearly kills Anna, which causes Elsa to become afraid of her powers and withdraw to the relative safety of her room...partly for everyone else's safety and partly to continue to keep their existence a secret.
Fast forward ten years or so and it's the eve of Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) being crowned queen. Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) is a boisterous, excitable, companionship-starved young woman who literally runs into Hans (voiced by Santino Fontana) and his horse (Disney continues to rock in the awesome animal department!) and their acquaintance results in a g-r-e-a-t musical number. That evening after the coronation Anna asks Elsa for her blessing to marry Hans, which Elsa refuses. When Anna continues to push her about it, Elsa freaks out and things begin to freeze, causing her to head for the hills...err, mountain north of town. Anna follows after her, with the aid of Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and his dog-wanna reindeer, Sven. Another fantastic musical number happens when they're talking to Olaf (voiced by Josh Gad), a talking snowman created by Elsa's wintery ascent up the mountain.
There is practically nothing that would count as "offensive," but PluggedIn did list a couple things, so if you want to check that out, click here.
Over all it was a lot of fun, with a very Tangled vibe. Matt summed it up well in his FB post a couple days ago when he said: "After seeing "Frozen" for the 2nd time, I've come to one conclusion. Olaf the Snowman needs to be in every movie ever made, from here on out, for the rest of time." I have to agree with his conclusion. :)
Enjoy and happy viewing!
