"Ho...ly...shit. That was freaking awesome! You need to see 'Pacific Rim' ASAP!"
"It's everything I ever wanted and more!"
"I think I'm in love."
Those may be my favorites texts I've ever gotten from him. :)
I ended up waiting a week before I was able to go see Pacific Rim and I have to say I'm sorry I didn't go up to Omaha and watch it at the IMAX on opening night with Matt. It would have been well worth the complete exhaustion the next day.
In case it's still unclear...the movie was awwwesome. And if you haven't gone yet, you need to see it. Right now! Even if you have seen it, you should go again to help boost its number, because it's only made $37.3M, trailing behind Despicable Me 2 (which you should also see) and Grown Ups 2 (which you should not). It really deserved to be leading the box office this week...it's that good.
I think part of the problem was that from the commercials it looks like a movie about giant robot things fighting giant ancient god, dinosaur looking things. And ok...at its core, it is. But they also managed to build in a fair amount of back story, character building and heart...amid the epic battles and massive destruction.
The beginning of the movie gives you a taste of the monsters to come...they did a great job building up to it. They tease you with dark shots and fleeting images of a monster, giving you a sense of "oh, I'll have to use my imagination on the enormity and detail of these things...they don't want to over play their hand," only to lead into amazing close ups and more monster than you ever wanted (in a good way).
There was one moment when my jaw literally dropped (literally, I swear!) and I said "awww!" out loud when one of the monsters does something none of the others had...I won't say what, because it's awesome! And jaw dropping! And awesome!
There really isn't anything objectionable in the movie, other than the violence (which isn't bloody so much as frequent and colossal)...but it is rated PG13. To read up on the basic story and content break down, check out the PluggedIn review.
Ooh, and be sure to stay through the credits...there's an extra (very short) scene you won't want to miss.
Enjoy and go see it...r-i-g-h-t n-o-w!
