I know this is going to be the guys' favorite post ever (said as sarcastically as humanly possible)...but believe it or not, arranging flowers can be quite a pain. Not only does it take knowing what flowers go well together, but then combining and making them look pretty takes a fair bit of creativity. Sure, you could just throw roses in a vase or buy a "mixed bouquet" and call it good...but if you want something special or elegant, it takes time, patience, precision (don't cut the stems too short...you can always trim it later if need be!) and vision. I know, I know...I'm making it sound unnecessarily complicated. And I don't mean to...ok, maybe a little...but gorgeous floral arrangements can be very impressive, so taking a minute to acknowledge that seems good to me. :)
However, there are some simple tricks that make flower arranging easier, like having the right vase or flowers...or using tape to create a grid-base. Why would you want to do that, you ask? Well, it allows for space between the flowers as you place them and helps in creating layers to the arrangement more easily.
This whole thing started when I got an email from Purewow for "Flowers made simple" that included a short video on how to make a really pretty floral arrangement using the tape-grid idea. It's fairly short and well worth your time to watch. This reminded me that I'd seen a picture of something similar on Pinterest and found the image I included above. When I clicked on it, it took me to a page on Martha Stewart's website, where I found a ton of great arrangement ideas broken down into categories, such as by bloom (hydrangeas, roses or peonies), by color (orange, white or green) and seasonal arrangements (holiday, spring or summer). There are a lot of great ideas...and admittedly they aren't all winners (there are some pretty hairy/fuzzy looking arrangements), but if nothing else, it can give you some great ideas to try out!
So there you have it...more than you ever wanted to know about flower arranging.
Enjoy and don't forget to take time to smell the roses! :)
