Man of Steel
I went to see the new Man of Steel movie last Friday night with my favorite movie-viewing buddy. While Superman has never been my favorite superhero, I can say that for the most part I definitely enjoyed the latest installment of this movie franchise.
After watching the commercials I wondered how they would incorporate his early childhood-young adulthood. They did a good job with the use of flashbacks and memories to give you important background information, which I thought a better choice than have a whole section of the movie solely devoted to it. They did spend a bit of time on his basic origin story in the beginning, but it was good set up for later in the movie.
Admittedly the beginning confused me a little, but as the movie progressed all my questions were answered. There was only one instance of "wait...that doesn't make sense" that I couldn't quite explain away with "superhero movie logic" - Superman's suit is introduced by Jor-El's consciousness opening a compartment in a spaceship that had been buried in ice for 20,000 years. Bill jokingly suggested that Jor-El had created it once he was uploaded into the ship...a bit out there, but works for me. Certainly wasn't going to ruin the movie for me anyway. Other than that, most other things were explainable or dismissible.
Some have criticized that there wasn't enough time taken in developing the lesser characters, which is a valid critique. Other than the main characters, everyone else makes barely more than a cameo appearance, which is understandable considering all the movie had to cover in a 143 minutes. Presumably they were basically introducing everyone, with the intention of getting to know them better in Man of Steel 2?
Overall, I thought Man of Steel was very entertaining and worth going to see...so if you're looking for a good summer blockbuster, I would definitely recommend going to see Man of Steel!

Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI saw Star Trek Into Darkness with a buddy this past weekend. They had a preview for Man of Steel... seemed *very* different from the Superman movies I've seen.
It was very different. The whole thing was just...different. There were some dumb & cheesy parts, don't get me wrong...but there were also a lot of really good, intense, exciting and deep parts too. Oh, and a lot of things blew up. And there was an evil chick who Bill was a big fan of...other than the fact that she was evil, that is. :)
DeleteStar Trek was really good too. I'm not a Trekie...at all. In fact I hate the old shows (hopefully we can still be friends!), but I really liked the last two Star Trek movies. Yes, Chris Pine and Karl Urban have a bit to do with it...but because of the technology available to them, I think they were able to movie more away from the cheesy-nerdy to the techie-geeky...and at the same time keep the hard core fans happy by a lot of fun references to the old series and movies. Ooh, and I LOVED Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan in Into Darkness! :D
I'm not a Trekkie either. I grew up watching Star Wars. I have seen quite a bit of Star Trek... mostly at the suggestion of a couple of friends. I like the TNG TV series and the original series movies.
DeleteKhan in the newest Trek movie was so great! Bad guys are often my favorite characters. I prefer bad guys like Jafar to bad guys like the witch in Snow White, though. Bad guys who are seemingly all-powerful who screw up in the end or get bested by the hero are better than sneaky ones in my mind. Khan is just that.
I like villains who terrify me. Like if they were real and I was standing in front of them, I'd be shaking in my boots. This Khan did that for me. :)
