The Guilt Trip
I was intrigued when I first saw commercials for The Guilt Trip. Since seeing What's Up, Doc?, I've been a Barbara Streisand fan (of her acting, not her politics!). The thought of her as the overly involved mother stuck in a car with Seth Rogen for a week was at least potentially entertaining.
The road trip is basically a backdrop for a mother-son relationship story. Amazingly the crudity is kept to a minimum. There are a few awkward moments, including a pit stop at a (PG-13 rated) strip joint when they get stuck in a blizzard - thankfully a fairly short scene. Ooh, and Joyce (Barbara Streisand) has a book-on-tape of Middlesex, segments of which are fortunately kept to a minimum...though Andy's (Seth Rogen) awkwardness in such situations is amusing - and it's kind of nice to see that at least someone is smart enough to be uncomfortable with such things around his mother. Should you be interested in specifics, PluggedIn is always a good resource.
Throw in a couple twists - one which I'm not sure how I feel about - and you have at least a fairly good movie.
If nothing else, it's nice to be able to see a Seth Rogen movie that not only tolerable, but fairly decent!
