Of course Google came up with an app that helps avoid Halloween costume faux pas!
Enter Frightgeist, stage left. :)
According to Engadget:
Google Trends has tapped into its daily search data to unearth the top 500 costume searches across the US. National and more local trends are listed (a whole lot of Star Wars characters and pirates out there), and if you're thinking about going as the Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn, expect a few awkward confrontations.
And on Frightgeist's "About" section it says:
I did a couple searches to see what was trending and so far no surprises...

Trending nationally:
#1 - Harley Quinn (note: "You have a frighteningly high chance of seeing another Harley Quinn costume at a party this year. Boo!")
#2 - Star Wars (Stormtroppers were the specific top costume search)
#3 - Superhero (Australia leads the regional interest list, followed by the UK, New Zealand, the Philippines and then the US)
#4 - Pirate (They have most consistent graph I've seen, with October of every year since 2005 spiking with pirate costume searches)
#5 - Batman (I enjoy that he has his own category and is #5 overall. Take that, Superman!)
#6 - Minnie Mouse (apparently Minnie is down this year, over the last 3 years)
#7 - Witch (not sure why, but Presque Isle, ME is lighting up the brightest nationally on the map for places interested in witch costumes. I'd have bet on Salem)
#8 - Minions (by regional interest, Canada beats out the US...with the UK trailing behind...)
#9 - Joker (seems to be more popular in the southern states, particularly Texas...and then Alaska...although the US is third on the international list, preceded by Ireland and the UK)
#10 - Wonder Woman (Bend, OR lights up the brightest for Wonder Woman searches...and internationally, Italy and France made this list)
The three at the bottom of the first page list (48-50 out of 50) were Shark, Grey wolf and Batgirl, respectively.
Did your Halloween costume make the list?

Song of the day: I'm in a Mumford and Sons kind of mood today...
