So, funny story...

About two weeks ago, I RSVP'd for Senator Kolterman and his wife to attend the Arc of Nebraska Senatorial Dinner. A couple days later, Kenny (our legislative aide) walked back in to the office from being upstairs on the floor with Senator Kolterman, to inform me that Senator Kolterman wanted a staff member to attend the Arc dinner with him...and that he (Kenny) had something going on that night, so would I mind attending? (Side note: Kenny usually goes to these kind of things with Senator Kolterman) I thought it was a little weird that he didn't subsequently mention what those plans were - he generally fills me in on the details, which usually involve his girlfriend, Ellen - but since he didn't volunteer the information, I decided not to be nosey. Good thing too, or else he would have had to come up with something on the spot! :)

Wednesday rolled around and I attended a reception with Senator Kolterman at the Nebraska Club (which was super awkward, 'cause I was the only staff member there!) before heading over to the Cornhusker for the Arc dinner. There we met up with his wife and (thankfully) some other staff members. The cocktail hour lasted...well, an hour...and 7pm finally rolled around. They open the door into the dining room and suddenly I see my mom walk by...and then my dad...and Matt.

What?!

Mom swung back over and asked if I'd seen the program, which of course I hadn't. A coworker next to me had one, but wouldn't let me see it. It wasn't until we headed in to find a place to sit that I finally got my hands on one...only to see my name printed on there, under "Recipient of the 2014 Legislative Advocacy Award"!

What?!

Bacon! :)
Over the course of the evening I found out the back story of how this chicanery came about. The Arc contacted Senator Coash to let him know that two organizations nominated me for this award, for my help in supporting developmental disability related legislation. He then contacted mom to let her know about it, so that the fam could attend. He then conspired with Senator Kolterman to get me to the dinner without my finding out about the award. They were successful, because I hadn't a clue. Kenny and David (Senator Coash's LA) helped keep it a secret, with Kenny "having something going on that night." Turds. :)

I was quite surprised and honored that I would nominated for something like this. It was both very nice and unnecessary. Senator Coash has worked very hard on several bills regarding developmental disabilities over the years, which is how I've been involved. Partaking in the chocolate chip cookies and bacon the Autism moms brought him as a thank you for LB505 (Autism insurance coverage mandate) was more than sufficient.

I was asked to say a few words after I was handed the award (which is now proudly displayed in my office...feel free to come see it!)...and I managed to not only be basically coherent, but not burst into tears nor trip down the stairs as I walked back to the table. I consider that a win, lol.

So yeah...that was my Wednesday evening. :)

TGIF...and have a good weekend!

  2. Katie- my earlier comment deleted itself - bad idea to try to comment from a phone. Lesson learned. So here's my second try: I was so pleased when we got the call that you had been nominated for this award from not one but two organizations. I have to admit - I had no idea how many people would be receiving awards that night and I certainly didn't think they'd expect you to get up and speak! Had I know that, I may not have been able to keep it a surprise so it was a good thing I didn't realize there would be only 2 people receiving awards and that, yes indeed, you'd be expected to take the mike and give an impromptu acceptance speech. YIKES! Well - you were kind & gracious and even managed a good joke. It was a wonderful evening and your Dad and I were so very proud. You even impressed your brother. Now THAT's amazing! :)
