American Sniper - Despite the excessive profanity (about 100 f-words), this movie is definitely worth seeing. The story feels very real...a "based on a true story" in the best way possible. It's a great reminder of how lucky we are as Americans, how thankful we should be to live in the USA, and the sacrifices our military make to keep us safe. The real footage used was amazing and the perfect way to end the movie. Also, hats off to Bradley Cooper, who played Chris Kyle...which means a lot coming from me.Imitation Game - I think it was Matt who said Alan Touring (Benedict Cumberbatch) was WWII's Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), which is a pretty fair assessment. While there was an underlying pro-homosexual message, it was not main focus of the story. The movie was engaging and the acting superb. If you're a fan of British films, you will recognize much of the cast. For those who watch Downton Abbey, there are a couple familiar faces as well.
Into the Woods - Albeit a little strange, this musical was quirky and enjoyable. A bit different from the play, there are a few parts that are a little disjointed, but the music and cast make up for this. The relativistic idea of "anything can happen (in the wood)" is somewhat balanced by the consequences of those actions. Johnny Depp's Big Bad Wolf was sufficiently creepy bordering on perv-y, which was perfect. Meryl Streep as the Witch was amazing as always and maintains her place as one of my all-time favorite actresses.Taken 3 - So much better than Taken 2....which was so bad that I've decided that Non-Stop is actually Taken 2. The storyline was different from the impression I got from the trailer, but I don't want to give anything away. My biggest complaint is the recasting of Stuart St. John (Dougray Scott), Brian Mills' (Liam Neeson) ex-wife Lenny's (Famke Jannsen) husband. Not only does he look nothing like the original Stuart (Xander Berkeley), but he's now "ethnic," with an accent. It was just...odd.
TGIF!
