A burner phone...kinda.

I can't remember how I got on PureWow's email list, but I'm glad I did. They send out fun emails a couple times a week reviewing a variety of topics...from custom made shoes to a fun recipe to a cool new app they've just discovered.

Today's gem is an app called "Burner," which is exactly what it sounds like.

Basically, this app allows you to create a "burner" or disposable number for your phone, so that you don't have to give out your real number when say, listing something on Craigslist or when you sign up for a program or membership that requires a phone number...or when you're reenacting some spy thriller and don't want "them" to find out who you are.

Once you program your actual information into the app, you select the desired area code and activate the fake number. The app will then record your voicemails and missed calls...plus the temporary number with display on other people's caller IDs, so your real number (and identity) remain concealed.

Once you no longer have a need for that particular number, you it "burn it" and the number is deleted, rendering it inoperable.  Admittedly this is my favorite part of the app...the idea of having a "burn it" button. :)

You can signed up for a one day free trial; after that, pricing starts at $2 a week.
